If anybody ever wonders why Star Cinema movies rake is more and more money than they already do locally, it is because of their main man and major liaison to world cinema, Ted Neri!
Truly the only man who has instant and indelible access to select cinemas and venues who can always assure Star Cinema has its captured market and demographic abroad that keeps on expanding, Ted is always on the move and on the lookout for cinema venues and locales where he takes Star Cinema’s blockbuster to become international blockbusters. “Nag start ako sa career kong ito maraming taon na kasi, since dati connected ako sa isang hotel, I studied well the behaviour of the tourism industry. Pagdating sa cinema, dapat inaalam mo palagi kung ano ang pang lasa ng movie going public.” He is quick to make the connection between local audiences and the Filipino movie audiences abroad. “Kung ang mga movie goers natin dito gustong gusto ng kilig, romantic comedies at melodrama, abroad ang mga Pinoy mas lalong gusto ng mga pelikula natin na maipalabas doon kasi, foreign shores and tinitirhan nila eh. Kung baga talagang gutom silang matangkilik ang mga stars natin dito.”
Well-connected and well rounded with how he is going to handle big celebrities, “you need to know them very well. Not just well. Kapag naging close ka sa isang malaking celebrity sa Pilipinas alam mo kung paano mo siya iha-handle kapag magkasama na kayo. Kasi maganda na ang rapport at affinity ninyo eh,” he states matter-of-factly. Case in point: with the myears that he has already known Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada, “gamay na gamay ko na siya, both as a colleague and as a friend. Makatao talaga siya. Walang ere iyan ang mga usnag dahilan kung bakit napakalakas ng masa appeal niya. He does not just trust anyone and he has really strong instincts kung kanino siya dapat magtiwala. So I was lucky to be a close pal all these years.” Ever the humble man, the years Ted refers to with the friendship he has with Erap is already counting more than two decades. “In fact mayor and Vice President days pa lang ni Erap magkasama na kami, so I know kapag magkasama kami, we are like close pals already kasi alam kong may confidence siya sa akin.”
How does an individual like Ted Neri survive triumphantly in an industry that is viewed to be a happy circus with some shadowy personalities lurking here and there? “I just keep my ground. Committed lang ako with what I do, kase alam ko ang takbo ng tourism industry. Kung ikakabit ko iyon sa movie industry, alam ko lahat ang dapat at hindi dapat.
